12th Grade - Senior Year College Planning Calendar


Arrow Finish gathering information on schools, select four to six you like best, and apply for admission. Retake the SAT and ACT if you aren’t satisfied with your first results.

Arrow Apply for financial aid by filling out the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). Consider all of your options for paying for school. Find out about scholarships and grants before taking out a student loan.

  • Try to get a 4.0 GPA as best as you can. Ask for a tutor or your counselor if you need help.Take SAT and/or ACT exams either at BYUH or at Leilehua High School in Wahiawa.
  • Perform at least 40 hours of service at KHIS or in Koolaulau Communities. (repairs, beach cleanups, hospital visits,
  • Tutor other students for at least 40 hours at KHIS or in neighboring schools.
  • Fill a leadership position.
  • Compete in academic competitions on a school, district, state, national and international levels.
  • Compete in atheletic programs or be involved with the school band.
  • Find at least 4 adult mentors that can help you with your career choice, colleges, extra-curricular activities.

Concentrate on the following items as you complete your last year in high school:

September

  • Make an appointment to meet your guidance counselor _______
  • Create an information file for each college on your list _______
  • Get off to a good academic start _______ October
  • Work on your college essays _______
  • Plan college visit and interviews (remember to send a thank you letter to each college you visit) _______
  • Attend a College Fair _______ November
  • Pick up a financial aid form (FAFSA) from your guidance counselor or get information online _______
  • NYS TAP will be processed by filing the FAFSA _______
  • Submit secondary school/counselor evaluation forms _______
  • Send at least one college application by Thanksgiving _______
  • Keep college files up-to-date with information _______ December
  • Finish all draft applications and essays – review with your guidance counselor, teacher or parent for accuracy and content _______
  • Mail completed applications to colleges _______
  • Ask teachers for recommendation letters (and provide them with envelopes) _______ January
  • Attend a Financial Aid night at your High School _______
  • Complete and file the FAFSA via mail or online _______
  • Send college special talent documentation or information to better your chance of acceptance _______ February
  • Ensure that colleges you have applied to have received the results of your FAFSA and college board tests _______ March
  • Watch your mail for college responses _______
  • Send any new materials to colleges which may help their admissions decision _______
  • Call HSBC for an education loan kit, or get the loan information and loan applications online _______ April
  • Responses from colleges to which you’ve applied should have arrived _______
  • Choose the college you wish to attend _______
  • Write “Thanks, but I’ve selected a different college” letter to colleges you will not attend _______
  • If you are on a waiting list, write a “pleading” letter and send any supporting material you can – ask teachers and coaches for assistance _______ May
  • Take Advance Placement (AP) exams _______
  • Complete dormitory forms, if necessary _______ June
  • Graduation – Congratulations!!! _______
  • Plan college skill building, if necessary _______ Summer
